Option 1: The Trench Method (Easiest DIY)
This traditional method uses the earth as an insulator and oxygen barrier.
⚠️ Safety & Preparation
- Clearance: Pick a wide, open outdoor dirt area. Ensure there are no overhead branches or nearby dry brush.
- Wood Condition: The 2m log must be thoroughly seasoned and dry. Wet wood will crack, rot, or fail to carbonize properly.
🛠️ Step-by-Step Execution
- Dig the Trench: Dig a trench roughly 2.5 meters long, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep.
- Build the Fuel Bed: Line the bottom of the trench with dry twigs, kindling, and small scrap wood.
- Ignite: Light the kindling and let a strong, roaring fire build up along the entire length of the trench.
- Place the 2m Log: Once you have a deep bed of glowing hot red embers, place your 2-meter log directly on top.
- Char the Surface: Let the log catch fire. Rotate it carefully using long metal tools or green wooden stakes until the entire log is burning vigorously and covered in a thin layer of ash/char.
- Suffocate (Seal): This is the critical step. Quickly cover the burning log with a layer of green leaves, sheet metal, or thick foil to act as a barrier. Immediately shovel the dug-out dirt back over the top until the entire trench is completely buried and sealed. No smoke should escape.
- Cool Down: Leave the trench buried for at least 24 to 48 hours. Unearthing it too early will reintroduce oxygen and cause the log to instantly burn to ash.
